Proverbs
Right now, at Lakeside, we're doing a series on the book of Proverbs. As many of you know, the book of Proverbs was created when some folks decided it would be a good idea to collect wise sayings of their day and put them in one place. We decided it would be fun to collect contemporary (and not so contemporary) proverbs from our day. Feel free to include some of your favorite biblical proverbs as well.
Remember what a proverb is: a short, catchy phrase (easy to remember) meant to convey wisdom.
Here are some I can think of off the top of my head.
- Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
- You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink
- If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough (a personal favorite).
- Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt (thanks, Scotty)
- Work smarter, not harder (thanks, EVERYONE!)
- Look before you leap
- Many hands make light work
- Too many cooks spoil the broth.

If you aren't good for yourself, you can't be good for anyone else.

Well, here goes a few:
If at first you don't succeed, try try again.
If you don't try, you will never succeed.
A sharp tongue cuts deeper than any sword.
Slow and steady wins the race.
Haste makes waste.
Believe and receive, Doubt and do without.
You may have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince.
So many actually from Proverbs...
11:27 He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it.
18:21 Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed.
19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.
21:23 He who guards his mouth and tongue, keeps himself from calamity.
18:13 He who answers before listening-that is his folly and his shame.
and sooo many more.

"Keep your friend close and your enemies even closer." First glance, that ones seems kind of dark. But, isn't there another way to look at this one? A Biblical way even..hmmm time to go look up 'enemy' and see what all the Word has to say.
